A salve is defined as an ointment used to promote healing of the skin or as protection. That word is also used as an effort to soothe (wounded pride or one's conscience). Way back when, hunters and gatherers probably noticed certain factors and herbal remedies had an effect on their wound healing process. Healers developed an intricate body of knowledge of the actions of many herbs and other plants which formed the base for the modern pharmaceutical industry. People still make their own home remedies and swear by their efficacy. We can't say for sure, but we do know that the oils we use are great for the skin, and lavender essential oil has been recognized throughout the centuries as having positive effects.
